  • Increased coping skills

  • Increased positive perspectives

  • Increased resiliency

What is Kristin Simpson’s training?

I obtained my Master Degree in Art Therapy with a focus on Family Therapy from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. I am currently under the supervision of Heidi Tournoux-Hanshaw, LPC-AT, ATR-BS, ATCS (hthanshaw@gmail.com) to complete the requirements of the Art Therapy Credentials Board to become a registered and board certified Art Therapist. Once I attain this, I can apply for recognition as an Art Therapist from the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. It is important to know the difference between art therapy, the therapeutic use of art in a therapy practice, and community art classes. Please visit my home page and click the link under Art to learn more about these differences and how I utilize art in my practice.

What is EMDR?

EMDR means Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This is an extensively researched, effective method of intervention that is proven to aid in recovery from trauma and other distressing life experiences. A simple way to think of it as if our memories are like files stored in the file cabinet of our brain. When we have a distressing event, it is like our file was spilled and became mixed up. The memory file might not have been stored in the same way as our other files so it might be hard to find or may get confused with other experiences we have in a way that causes a high level of emotional discomfort during events that have nothing to do with the original distressing event. EMDR is a process which helps our body re-organize that memory file so that it no longer gets in the way.
