Trauma Informed Care

Trauma-Informed Care recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role trauma may play in an individual's life.

I take a collaborative, trauma informed, systems-based approach to therapy when working with clients. I believe that each individual has the strength inside of them to become successful in their day-to-day relationships.

Coping Strategies:

One’s relationship with family, individual thoughts, feelings, and experiences shapes how successfully that person functions in their day to day lives. The individual responds to crisis and stress based upon how they process their experiences using the tools that they developed through their life experiences. There are times when people begin to notice that their coping tools may no longer be useful in the same way or serve as they desire.

Historical Trauma:

Individuals are influenced not only by their own experiences, but by the historical experiences of their family and community. This is called historical trauma and it is important to acknowledge how the past is experienced in our current social interactions. This acknowledgement can aid in the healing process. Counseling can be a safe place to begin self-exploration in a way that helps clients understand who they are, where they come from, and how to best move forward.

While my experiences as a therapist may be different from my client’s experiences, my hope is that within the process of therapy, a safe space can be created in which clients feel supported to begin their process of healing. In this process, it is my wish to honor each person’s experience and acknowledge that our experiences can define how we sense, interact, and relate to the people and the world around us. When self-reflection is combined with the art process, clients are better able to assess, process, and create the changes they desire.
